The talks took place at 11 a.m. local time (9 a.m. Hanoi time) in the city of Busan, South Korea, as the final stop of President Donald Trump’s five-day trip across three Asian nations before returning to the United States.
This was the first face-to-face meeting between the two leaders since their sidelines discussion at the G20 Summit in Osaka, Japan, in June 2019.
En route to South Korea, President Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One that he was considering reducing certain tariffs on Chinese imports.
“I plan to lower some tariffs because I believe they’ll help us tackle the fentanyl problem. They’ll do what they can,” Trump said.
According to China’s Foreign Ministry, the two leaders are expected to hold “comprehensive and in-depth discussions on key issues.”
“We are ready to work with the United States to ensure that this meeting produces positive outcomes, sets a new direction, and provides fresh momentum for the stable development of China–U.S. relations,” the ministry’s spokesperson said.
