At an event held in the Oval Office of the White House on December 15, President Trump signed an executive order declaring fentanyl a weapon of mass destruction. The order states: “Illicit fentanyl is closer to a chemical weapon than a drug. An extremely small amount—about 2 milligrams, nearly impossible to detect—is enough to kill. Hundreds of thousands of Americans have died from fentanyl overdoses. As President of the United States, my highest duty is to protect the country and its people. Accordingly, I declare fentanyl and its key precursor chemicals to be weapons of mass destruction.”

According to The Hill, the move would grant the Trump administration broader authority and additional measures to target countries, drug trafficking groups, and organizations involved in the production and distribution of fentanyl.

Fentanyl is a powerful opioid painkiller that can be highly addictive and is prescribed only in limited medical circumstances. However, it is frequently manufactured illegally and abused as a synthetic drug.
