In a Truth Social post on September 14, Trump blamed “radical left Democrats” for pressuring Bowser into cutting ties with ICE, warning that such a move would allow crime to return.
“To the people and businesses of Washington: Don’t worry. I will stand with you and won’t let this happen. I will declare a state of emergency and place the city under federal control if necessary,” Trump wrote. Bowser’s office has yet to respond to his remarks.
Previously, Trump placed D.C.’s police department under federal oversight and deployed federal law enforcement, including ICE agents, to patrol the city. It remains unclear when their mission will end.
According to Trump, these actions turned Washington “from one of the most dangerous and murder-filled cities in America, and even the world, into one of the safest — in just weeks.”
While Bowser initially praised Trump’s intervention for significantly reducing crime and even signed an order directing city police to work with federal agents, she has since reversed course, stating that Washington police will no longer cooperate with ICE.
