President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that he would appeal the ruling on tariffs to the Supreme Court. The decision came after a federal appeals court ruled that his global tariff imposition exceeded his authority.
In an appearance on Scott Jennings' radio show, Trump reiterated his claim that the tariffs represented an "economic emergency" and warned of severe consequences if the case fails at the Supreme Court level.
"We would see a chain reaction like never before," Trump stated regarding the potential fallout from losing the case at the nation’s highest court.
The U.S. Federal Appeals Court ruled on Friday that Trump misinterpreted emergency powers to impose high tariffs on countries worldwide. The 7-4 decision upheld a previous ruling by the U.S. Court of International Trade.
According to the appellate court, "The Act grants significant authority to the President to take actions in response to a declared national emergency, but none of these actions clearly include the imposition of tariffs, import duties, or similar taxes, nor the power to levy taxes." Although they found the tariffs illegal, the judges allowed the tariffs to remain in place while the case proceeds through the legal system.
Trump claimed that the stock market would "skyrocket" if he wins the tariff case at the Supreme Court. He also warned that the U.S. would be "laughed at by other nations" if he fails to maintain the tariffs.
The President further argued that without the tariffs, the U.S. would become "weak, pitiful, and not wealthy."
