“This is a wonderful meeting where we’ll talk about what has been accomplished in the military, how strong we are, and many other positive things. It’s all about optimism,” Trump told NBC News on September 28. He added that the gathering would include “great people” and emphasized its spirit of solidarity.
U.S. media previously reported that Trump would attend the unprecedented meeting at Marine Corps Base Quantico on September 30. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth ordered hundreds of generals, including commanders deployed worldwide, to return for the event. The scale has raised eyebrows, as senior officers are traveling thousands of kilometers on short notice.
Initial speculation suggested the Pentagon might use the occasion to announce dismissals or demotions. However, sources later clarified the meeting will serve more as a motivational session, with Hegseth expected to stress the importance of “warrior spirit” and outline a new vision for the U.S. military.
Hegseth has already dismissed about 20 senior officers and pledged to cut the number of generals by 20%. He is also reviewing proposals to downgrade certain commands and consolidate combatant commands, shifting focus toward Africa, the Middle East, and the Indo-Pacific.
The move comes as the Trump administration signals a major shift in defense priorities, pivoting from preparing for potential conflicts with rival powers to concentrating more on homeland defense and domestic military operations.
