President Donald Trump issued a stark warning to Russian President Vladimir Putin, stating that "something will happen" if the U.S. is dissatisfied with his actions, hinting at the possibility of additional sanctions on Russia.
Speaking to the press on September 3 in the Oval Office during a meeting with Polish President Karol Nawrocki, Trump emphasized that Putin is fully aware of the U.S. stance.
"I have no message for President Putin. He knows my position and will make his own decision," Trump said.
He added, "Whatever decision he makes, we will either be satisfied or not. If we are not satisfied, you will see something happen," though he did not specify what actions would follow.
Trump dismissed claims that he has been soft on Russia, citing secondary sanctions imposed on India for purchasing oil from Russia and suggesting further steps could be taken.
"You call that inaction? I haven’t even implemented phases two and three yet," he said.
Since returning to the White House in January, Trump has increased efforts to mediate an end to the war in Ukraine, though no breakthroughs have been achieved.
He held a summit with Putin in Alaska, followed by meetings with European leaders and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House, fueling hopes for direct negotiations between Putin and Zelensky to discuss peace options.
However, recent developments have dampened expectations for a direct meeting. On September 3, President Putin stated that there is an opportunity to end the war through negotiations, "if justice prevails."
But he also warned that Moscow is prepared to end the conflict through force if necessary.
Putin reiterated his willingness to meet Zelensky in Moscow, while Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha called this proposal "unacceptable."
