Jeffery Carroll, assistant chief of the Washington police, said the gunman “ambushed” the victims. He “walked around the corner, raised his weapon, and directly targeted the National Guard members.”
An AFP reporter near the scene described hearing multiple loud gunshots as people fled, creating chaos. FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed that both soldiers are in critical condition. This incident is considered the most serious attack involving the National Guard since President Donald Trump deployed the force nationwide as part of his anti-crime initiative.
President Trump referred to the shooter as a “beast,” adding that although the suspect was also seriously injured, he “will still pay a very heavy price” for his actions.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced that an additional 500 troops would be deployed to Washington, bringing the total to 2,500. “This will only strengthen our resolve to keep Washington safe and beautiful,” he said of the shooting.
