Trump: UAV Incident in Poland Could Be a Mistake
President Donald Trump stated that the recent UAV intrusion into Poland's airspace might have been a mistake, while European officials labeled it as a "provocative act."
"It could have simply been an error, but either way, I'm not satisfied with the circumstances surrounding the entire situation. I hope this sort of thing comes to an end," Trump said to reporters on September 11, referring to the incident involving several drones entering Poland's airspace the previous day.
This was Trump’s second comment on the matter since it occurred, following a cryptic post on Truth Social on September 10. "What’s going on with the Russian drones violating Polish airspace? Let's see," he wrote. On the same day, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk reported that at least "19 Russian UAVs" had breached Polish airspace, mostly coming from Belarus. Polish air defense and NATO units responded, shooting down at least four of the drones, while others appeared to have crashed after running out of fuel.
A NATO spokesperson confirmed that this was the first time Allied aircraft had been deployed to intercept targets over a member nation’s airspace.
The incident occurred amid ongoing Russian airstrikes on western Ukraine. Russia’s Ministry of Defense stated that they were not targeting Poland and expressed willingness to consult with the country.
Since returning to the White House, Trump has made several attempts to secure a ceasefire or peace agreement in the Ukraine conflict.
While U.S. lawmakers are pushing for additional sanctions against Russia, Trump has not committed to supporting these measures. He previously warned that a "second phase" of sanctions could soon be imposed, following the sanctioning of India for importing Russian oil.
