“I think they had a very good meeting with President Vladimir Putin,” U.S. President Donald Trump said on December 3. “What results will come from it? I can’t say yet, because both sides need to work together.”
Trump made the remarks after being asked about the December 2 meeting between U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, Trump’s son-in-law, with President Putin at the Kremlin. The two representatives traveled to Moscow to present an updated version of Washington’s proposal—already discussed with Kyiv—to end the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
“President Putin wants to end the war. That’s their impression,” Trump added. “He wants a deal.”

According to Trump, Ukraine has “basically agreed” to the U.S. proposal. He said Kyiv should have accepted a deal back in February, when he and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met at the White House. On December 3, the Kremlin stated that Russia is ready to negotiate with the United States as many times as needed until a solution to the Ukraine conflict is found.
“Some things were accepted, but others were not acceptable—this is the normal process of reaching a compromise,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said. He did not specify which parts Russia accepted or rejected. Peskov added that “this is the first time the two sides have had a direct exchange of views,” and said Moscow expects Washington to keep the process confidential to allow progress in peace talks.
The new round of negotiations comes as NATO has committed hundreds of millions of dollars to purchase U.S. weapons for Ukraine. NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte said the alliance must ensure “Ukraine is in the best possible position to continue fighting.”
President Zelensky said a doorway to peace has opened, while noting that current negotiation efforts must be supported by increased pressure on Russia.
